Ubiquinol is the active, reduced form of coenzyme Q10. It plays a central role in the energy production of cells, especially in the mitochondria, where energy is generated in the form of ATP.
The Q10 (ubiquinone) taken in with food and produced in the body is converted into ubiquinol in the organism. Our body cells contain ubiquinol (reduced) and ubiquinone (oxidized). The body's own enzyme system regenerates ubiquinol in the body. Stress, excessive strain, environmental influences and excessive exercise can shift the ratio to the detriment of ubiquinol in the body. If the organism is now offered ubiquinol directly, the body's own conversion process is no longer necessary.
The difference between ubiquinone and ubiquinol lies in their chemical state:
